Peekskill is a city in Westchester County, New York. It is situated on a bay along the east side of the Hudson River, across from Jones Point. Peekskill was a thriving riverfront manufacturing community in the 19th century. It had three docks on the Hudson, a chemical company that produced the first Crayola crayon, several lumberyards, including the N. Dain's Sons Company, which still exists, and seven foundries that shipped nearly 200,000 stoves in 1894, according to John Curran, the city historian. AMONG the schools in the district are the Oakside Early Childhood Center for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. Students attend one of three elementary schools for grades 1 through 5, move on to Peekskill Middle School and then to Peekskill High School, from which Gov. George E. Pataki graduated in 1963. During the summer, concerts are held in the 15-acre Riverfront Green park, which offers a playground, waterfront trail, a public boat launch, kayaking and boat excursions. The 205-acre Depew Park offers an outdoor swimming pool, five tennis courts, two playgrounds and walking and running trails. It adjoins the Blue Mountain Reservation, a county park in Cortlandt. |
